What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Veneers are thin, strong shells that are adhered to the front surfaces of your teeth. Much like new siding on a house, they completely change the appearance of the existing tooth structure underneath. We’ll spend time discussing the shape, length, and color of your veneers beforehand to make sure they blend in with the rest of your smile and look very natural. Since we’ll match them to your existing shade, some patients prefer to whiten first to help their final results look even better.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Generally speaking, porcelain veneers are wonderful for anyone who wants to correct flaws such as:

  • Chips
  • Stains
  • Misaligned teeth
  • Worn down teeth
  • Uneven or oddly shaped teeth
  • Small gaps

However, your smile must be healthy before it can be beautiful, so we’ll make sure you don’t have tooth decay or gum disease that needs to be treated first. Good oral hygiene habits are also important to maintain your veneers over time.

What Is the Procedure Like?

After we’ve made sure that porcelain veneers are right for you, we can get started. Here’s what you can expect from the procedure:

  • First, to make sure your veneers don’t feel too large or bulky, we’ll prepare your teeth by removing a very thin layer of enamel.
  • Then we’ll take impressions to send to our dental lab where they’ll make your veneers to our exact specifications. This usually takes 1-2 weeks, so we’ll put temporary veneers on your teeth that look and function normally until your second visit.
  • When you return, we’ll remove the temporary veneers and cement the permanent veneers into place. Then we’ll make small adjustments as needed and make sure they feel great.

How Can You Maintain Your Veneers?

As a cosmetic dentist in Sheperdsville, we know you want your your results to look great for as long as possible. Fortunately, porcelain is strong and durable, so your veneers can last 10-20 years with the right maintenance:

  • See us for regular checkups so we can catch any problems early on.
  • A veneer itself can’t get a cavity, but the natural tooth structure underneath it can, so it’s crucial to do well with brushing and flossing.
  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste to prevent scratching your porcelain.
  • Wear a nightguard if you clench and grind at night.
  • Avoid chewing on anything hard like ice, pencils, or hard candy.
